Skiing Strong After Two Slalom Races

Sparta Ski Team 2026

Varsity Boys Take Podium Second at Slalom Race #2

Last night’s second Conference B slalom league race was held in bitterly cold conditions on a perfectly groomed Kamikaze Race Trail at Mountain Creek. Despite the temperatures, all of our alpine racers pushed through and skied strong from start to finish. The boys' varsity ski team once again earned a podium second-place finish, posting 4 wins and 1 loss, while the girls' team recorded 1 win and 2 losses. The boys are currently ranked 6th out of 25 teams, and the girls are ranked 14th out of 18.

Leading the way for the Varsity Boys Team were Sparta Ski Team Captains and seniors Ryan Grycuk and Pat Fitzsimmons, along with Austin Dobbs (freshman) and Finn Kowalski (sophomore), all finishing among the top ten fastest boys in the race. At the first slalom race of the season held on January 12th at Winter 4 Kids, Captain Pat Fitzsimmons, Willem Koehler (freshman), and Alek Diamond (senior) contributed to the team time.

On the girls’ side, top-ten performances from Sunny Young (junior), Maddie Gambino (senior), and Kate Agudo (senior) helped anchor the Varsity Girls ski team, with Taylor Thonus (freshman) also contributing a strong run to the overall team time and results. And at their first slalom race of the season, the team time was delivered by Maddie Gambino, Sunny Young, Taylor Thonus, and freshman Olivia Mooney.

Delivering key team times for the Boys JV Ski Team were Alek Diamond (senior), followed by Kyler Schwarz (sophomore), Jeffrey Leibrecht (sophomore), and Zach Hatley (sophomore), all contributing team times to the overall result. At the first slalom race, freshman Austin Dobbs finished in first place.

With the conclusion of slalom training, the Sparta Alpine racers have made significant progress. Our varsity ski teams will now give it their all at the All-Varsity Slalom Cup Races, a key event that will heavily influence and help balance the league rankings.

The boys varsity team will look to build on their steady 80% winning record, while the girls team will have the opportunity to compete against 14 new opponents with the goal of boosting their win percentage. These All-Varsity races are not ones you’ll want to miss; expect high intensity, great energy, and outstanding skiing from start to finish.

Come to Mountain Creek and cheer on the Girls Varsity Ski Team (Maddie, Kate, Sunny, Taylor, Abbie & Olivia) on Tuesday at 4:30 PM and the Boys Varsity Ski Team (Pat, Ryan, Chase, Finn, Austin & Will) on Wednesday at 4:30 PM. Ring those cowbells and make some noise!
